Old Number 1 in Pittsfield, New Hampshire

As part of our weekly building history series, today we take a look at Old Number 1 in Pittsfield, New Hampshire:

This historic boarding house was erected by James Joy of Pittsfield Mfg. Co. to provide lodging for his workers, mostly daughters of local farmers. In 1836 Mr. and Mrs. Eben Swett and the son John, who later became the famous California inventor, lived here as managers. It was teh first of 19 such buildings which eventually became known as the “Corporation.”
