Unfortunately, the damage from Hurricane Irene is looking pretty grim. The Burlington Free Press has a news story about Vermont’s covered bridges that are either completely gone or heavily damaged. Here is a sad video of the covered bridge in Bartonsville, Vermont that was washed away by Hurricane Irene. Losing these historic structures is a huge blow to towns and villages all over Northern New England.
Also, bad news for leaf-peepers out there. According to the Union Leader, State Routes 302 and 112 (Kancamagus Highway) were heavily damaged with bridges and travel lanes washed out. Hopefully, these roads will be repaired in time for Fall’s arrival.
Update: The covered bridge in Bartonsville, Vermont will be rebuilt.
