The American Chestnut tree was once a prominent inhabitant of towns and cities across the United States. Unfortunately, a blight nearly wiped out the entire species over 70 years ago. Here is a video that chronicles a rare find of an American Chestnut tree in Farmington, New Hampshire a few years ago.
Currently, The American Chestnut Foundation is trying to breed a blight-resistant strain of the tree. We should all support their efforts in anyway we can. Many a town and village in Northern New England has a Chestnut Street which, many years ago, was once lined by these majestic trees. Maybe one day they will be again.
